The reason for this is that there are signs representing almost everything and everyone, from wars to inventions, from sporting heroes to kings and queens. The use of pub and inn signs started with the Romans. In those days, these commercial establishments (or ‘Tabernae' as they were known) would hang vine leaves outside to indicate that they sold wine.
