CT - When and why did you decide to be an English teacher?
Marise - When I was 18 and about to go to university. I was finishing my course at Cultura Inglesa and I realized I loved studying this language as well as working with it.
CT - How did you get a job at Cultura Inglesa?
Marise - In 1995 I came here and asked if they needed a teacher. I was told they didn't need one at that moment. Fortunately, six months later they gave me a chance and here I am.
CT - How long have you been working here?
Marise - For eight and a half years.
CT - How does it feel to be teaching here for such a long time?
Marise - Well, Cultura Inglesa is my second home. Apart from my own house, here is the place I spend most of my time.
CT - Do you teach anywhere else?
Marise - Not any longer. I worked in a state school and in another English course for a long time, but that is part of my past.
CT - Do you like teaching?
Marise - In fact, I LOVE teaching!
CT - If you were not an English teacher what would you be?
Marise - To be quite frank, I can't imagine myself doing anything else besides teaching. Anyway, if I had to choose another job, I would probably be an interpreter.
CT - Can you remember any funny fact that happened during one of your classes?
Marise - Certainly. It happened when I was teaching a KET group and there was a problem with the computer (as usual).I got mad,as I was in the middle of an important presentation, and started arguing with the computer calling it dumb, stupid and so forth. The class started laughing at me and it took me some minutes to manage to get back their attention.
CT - When you get yourself daydreaming what do you usually think of?
Marise - Nothing special, it's really up to the occasion, although I must say I daydream about being able to enjoy myself far too much.
CT - What kind of music do you like?
Marise - Love songs, especially those from the 70's.
CT - Do you have a favourite song?
Marise - Not one only, but I can mention some, such as: Monday, Monday; F comme femme; You make me feel brand new;I started a joke, etc.
CT - What is your favourite book? And author?
Marise - “O Pequeno Príncipe”. I don't have a favourite author, provided the book is good.
CT - What is your favourite TV programme?
Marise - Several series like: E.R., Without a Trace, Third Watch, The District, Everwood, Touched by an Angel and C.S.I.
CT - If you were elected president of this country, what are the first three things you would do?
Marise - That is a tough question, as our country needs so many things. It is easy to know what to fix but not that simple to know how, especially because we are not alone in this world. We depend on others and have responsibilities towards them and ourselves. If I could make things better just with my will,I would improve our educational and health care system and reform the prison system.
CT - Describe yourself in one word.
Marise - Dreamer
CT - A quotation:
Marise - Gosh! One only? ”To teach is to touch someone's life forever.”
CT - What is your message for the Cultura Times readers?
Marise - With the risk of sounding repetitive, I would strongly advise them to learn how to learn English,as nowadays the language is crucial for any career.
